The Institute began in 1991 - with the collective imagination of a group of farsighted volunteer citizens tapped for service to find practical solutions to meet the challenge of then-President George H. W. Bush's education initiative, Goals 2000. These volunteers were businessmen and businesswomen, professionals, and educators who were not only believers, but doers.
It was from the Goal Four Committee (that the United States be first in science and mathematics education) that the vision for a mathematics and science institute evolved. With the financial commitment of many individuals and businesses, and major support from the Whitaker Foundation, the Institute was born.
The Institute has gone through several name changes, most recently known as the Capital Area Institute for Mathematics and Science (CAIMS). CAIMS bases its services on how children learn. Research has shown that a clear foundation in inquiry-based science and mathematics is even more critical than initially thought. It is the Institute's pledge to deliver the best that a major research university can offer in science and mathematics education at every level.
Our VisionUniversal mathematics and science preparation to help build a better world.
